Ski/Snowshoe Trip Guidelines

The Nordic season usually runs from January to March each year and has at least two multi-day trips and 4-5 day trips.
All trips use the International Bus service and have several pick-up stops, the main one being at the Scotia Barn by the Canlan Sports Center (Burnaby 8 Rinks) located at 6501 Sprott Street in Burnaby. Parking is at the far end of the lot and the bus departs at 7:00 a.m. For trips to the east (Manning, etc.) the bus also picks up at the 232 exit at the Chevron Station at 7:30 a.m. For trips to the west (Callaghan, etc.) there is a pick up at St. David’s Church at Taylor Way and the Upper Levels Highway in West Vancouver at 7:15 a.m.
Please use a ski bag for your skis and poles with your name clearly marked on the bag. Snowshoes should also be carried in a labelled bag.

Safety:
Being aware of potential problems and being capable of dealing with these problems is a part of every member’s responsibility in an outdoor activity. The following is a brief list of items you should consider carrying with you:

  • basic first aid supplies
  • duct tape
  • ample water
  • whistle
  • dress in layers for the weather: carry a waterproof jacket, toque, gloves and an extra pair of warm socks

Etiquette:
Always follow the guidelines of the trip leader, always ski/snowshoe with at least one other person, but a group is preferable:

  • stay with your group at all times. Keep an eye on those behind you, especially at trail intersections
  • watch for any signs of distress, fatigue or cold in other members
  • two skiers meeting head-on pass to the right of each other. Give skiers coming down the hill the right-of-way
  • if you wish to pass a skier on the trail shout “track”
  • do not block the trail by skiing two or more abreast. Keep to the right on a two-way trail
  • fill all holes made by you on the trail
  • plan rest stops to keep the group together and to take time for water and snack breaks
