E-Bike Guidelines

Joining rides with your e-bike

Thank you for exploring riding with VOA. We welcome all E-assist bikes & riders to our club and encourage your participation on rides and activities. In VOA we have a mix of traditional human powered cyclists & newer E-assist cyclists.

While our two groups enjoy the same rides together it is expected that E-assist cyclists are patient while human powered cyclists climb hills and have somewhat limited speed acceleration.

Please refer to our Cycling Guidelines for an overall view of our cycling guidelines. This information below is specific to E-cyclists who are required to provide proof of 3rd party liability insurance before riding with us.

Insurance

E-cyclists are responsible for their personal 3rd party liability insurance coverage because our insurance policy does not insure E-bikes or riders. Either Pedal Power Insurance or personal house insurance can be valid options as listed below.

If you have house insurance and you are able to add 'Comprehensive Personal Liability Insurance' into your package you may be covered through your policy. Each insurance package differs so you will need to check & confirm that you have CPL coverage as it is usually added as a separate component within a homeowners insurance package.

Comprehensive Personal Liability Insurance covers mishaps, injury or damage to other people or property that the policyholder inadvertently causes and could be held legally responsible for.

If you are not able to obtain 3rd party liability insurance through your house insurance we have identified a very easy process through an inexpensive online non-for-profit Canadian insurance provider who specifically provides individual E-assist rider insurance that insures you for North American travel.

Oasis Pedal Power Insurance

Cost is $35 for a cyclist + $9 for the addition of an E-cyclist rider = TOTAL $44 per year (pedalpowerinsurance.ca).

Please note that in order to attend club cycles all E-assist riders must submit your proof of insurance before coming out to ride. This proof of insurance must be renewed and submitted yearly.
